José Hernández’s epic Argentine poem of social protest was first published in 1872. After being drafted to defend an Argentine border fort, the gaucho Martín Fierro discovers on his return to the pampas that his house, farm and family are gone. Fierro becomes an outlaw who is pursued and embattled by the police militia.

El poema épico argentino de la protesta social fue publicada por primera vez en 1872 por José Hernández de. Después de ser reclutado para defender una frontera argentina, el gaucho Martín Fierro descubre que a su regreso que su casa, la granja y la familia han ido. Fierro se convierte en un forajido que es perseguido y acosado por la milicia policial.

The group will meet Wednesday, April 9, 7-8:30 pm, 3rd Floor, Seminar Room, Main Library. Attendees have the option to read in English and/or Spanish. Discussions may also be in English and Spanish. Attendees do not have to be bilingual. Copies of The Gaucho Martín Fierro (Spanish: El Gaucho Martín Fierro) will be held at the 2nd floor Readers Services Desk one month before the discussion.
