While the wealthy of 19th-century Europe sipped from Puerto Rico’s exquisite black coffee, the anemic families who harvested the coffee lived in squalid huts and rarely saw a scrap of meat. Manuel Zeno-Gandia’s novel of 1894 characterizes the grinding poverty of Puerto Rico back in the day.
