The novel, set in 1914, France, details the vicissitudes of the First World War. Due to their political differences, two families, both branches from the same family tree, face off.  After the death of patriarch Julio Madariaga, the Hartrotts leave Germany and the Desnoyers to France. The families fight on opposing sides in WWI. The novel travels through the Dantesque scenes of a Europe torn apart, where the only thing that survives is the desire to live.
