Tété was born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue. She survives a childhood of brutality and fear, finding solace in the rhythms of African drums and mysteries of voodoo. When 23-year old Toulouse Valmorain arrives on the island in 1770, he discovers that running his father’s plantation is neither glamorous nor easy. Although Valmorain purchases young Tété for his bride, it is he who will become dependent on the services of his teenaged slave.

Tété nació una esclava en la isla de Saint-Domingue. Ella sobrevive a una infancia brutal encuentra consuelo en los ritmos de los tam-bores y los misterios del vudú africano. Toulouse Valmorain llega a la isla en 1770 para manejar la plantación de su padre. Aunque compra Valmorain Tete como su novia, que pasa a depender de los servicios de su esposa esclava.
