First published in 1962, The Book of Lamentations is now considered a masterpiece of contemporary Latin American fiction. Author Rosario Castellanos’ novel, set in the 1930s, is framed around an 1860s uprising of Maya Indians against the Chiapan white ruling class in Southern Mexico. Drawing on two centuries of struggle among the Maya Indians, Castellanos casts an unflinching eye on the effects of oppression, ignorance, and misery.

Publicado por primera vez en 1962, Oficio de Tinieblases considerado una obra maestra en la ficción latinoamericana contemporanea. Esta novella de Rosario Castellanos, colocada historicamente en el año 1930, esta encuadrada alrededor de un levantamiento social Maya en los 1860’s contra la clase dominante blanca en el sur de México. Castellanos emite un ojo inquebrantable en los efectos de la opresión, ignorancía y misería.

The group will meet Wednesday, November 11, 7-8:30 pm, 3rd Floor, Seminar Room, Main Library. Attendees have the option to read in English and/or Spanish. Discussions may also be in English and Spanish. Attendees do not have to be bilingual. Copies of Rosario Castellanos’ The Book of Lamentations (Spanish: Oficio de Tinieblas) will be held at the 2nd floor Readers Services Desk one month before the discussion.
